Bioremediation by Oil-Eating Bacteria

This bioremediation experiment provides students inquiry-based experiment options to vary parameters for determining optimum conditions for converting oil to water soluble hydrocarbons.

 

 

 

 

Components:

  • Oil-eating microbes in stabilizer
  • pH paper
  • 3 plastic jars
  • 6 transfer pipets
  • Plastic spoon

Requirements:

  • Cooking oils such as vegetable, canola, corn, etc
  • Various commercial oils such as motor oil, engine oil, lubricating oil,
    etc.
  • Tap Water
  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Gloves

Time Requirements:
After an establishment of cultures (1-2 days), the experiment can be performed during one 50-minute lab period.  However, results must be observed over ten days to several weeks. Alternatively, this inquiry-based experiment can be conducted over the course of several days or weeks.
