What is in Our Water?

Objective

Students will test laboratory-prepared and environmental water samples using color reagents that detect coliform bacteria.

This is an educational activity and not to determine potability of water.

Contents of this kit include materials for 3 tests plus 3 control samples.

Components:

• Coliform Detection BrothTM
• Sterile water (negative control)
• Coliform control
• E. coli control
• 2 ml Microtest tubes with screw-caps
• Sterile calibrated transfer pipets
• Plastic sterile 15 ml tubes with caps

Requirements:

• Disposable laboratory gloves
• Water sources from the environment
• Bottled water sources
• Disinfectant (10% chlorine bleach solution)
• Laboratory marking pen

Time Requirements:
Water samples must be obtained prior to starting the experiment. Requires approx. 30 minutes and overnight incubation.
