Genes in a Tube

In this experiment, cheek cells are obtained and a series of steps are performed to extract DNA and precipitate it from solution.  The DNA is collected and transferred to a tube, which can be stored in the freezer.  It can also be used as a pendant on a string necklace to wear.

Contents of this kit include materials for 6 DNA extractions.

Requirements:

  • Freezer-cold
    91% or 70% isopropyl alcohol
    (rubbing alcohol)
  • 10% Bleach solution in cup or jar
  • styrofoam or cardboard box
  • permanent ink marker
  • self-sealing plastic bag
